CHAPTERS ONE & TWO INTRODUCTION
The tone for chapters 1 and 2 derive from some of my early thoughts about Art invited into Art institutions. Some of this as perambulations of New World order reckoning with the ends of World War I, World War II and after 1989, aka end of Cold War, and the war landscapes of today.
Observations about games, then, a little later on, ideas come abreast alongside dialogue on power, optimism and realism. The 1970s were such a great time to be alive and 22. I had been introduced to folk songs and novels and now I was right into cinema.
Arts Ideas thread the life of humans into the imagined and curious world of awe, care and wonder. Also, at base, it is the landscape of libido and emotions; take your pick, Je m'appelle Agneta (2026) As well, (a modern-day Shirley Valentine (1989). At the base of all this is the raising of the flag for continued responsibilities about safety and freedom. Childhood cinema started with England's tales, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Tom Brown's School Days and Great Expectations, then came the saucy Forever Amber. I saw Kubrick's 2001. in 1968, then the interpretation of Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. Then next, the best that followed was seeing Kubrick's interpretation of W.M. Thackeray classic, Barry Lyndon, a story so well put about foolishness and poor unheroic writing. My next step has been my next challenge, writing about my life. I acknowledge and recognize that Caroline White, only just a Mrs. Tiffen, died with her child at age seventeen. Were it not for her distraught husband, Henry Tiffen, writing to implore more family to join him in New Zealand, and that the loving parents accepted that the young son Fred, his young brother of sixteen just having completed secondary schooling, was a son that they were able to give permission to allow to leave and begin his journey, I would not be here today. Henry gave Fred a job. When I was sixteen, I cut my hair short like Twiggy, bought the eye lash brushes and cut cloth Mary Quant style with my friend Marja. My darling cousin Anne sent me my first coloured pantyhose as birthday present. This was the year that my mother died.
