about Kelly Berg
'Berg’s dramatic paintings of erupting volcanoes, lava, lightning bolts and tidal waves reference Mount Vesuvius, Amboy Crater, the volcanic islands of Hawaii and Giant Rock in Mojave Desert and parallel the philosophy of the sublime (espoused by 17th century Irish philosopher, Edmund Burke) because her work awakens the viewer’s feelings of primal dread of the destructive power of nature. In our current apocalypse of terrifying climate events, Berg’s reminders of the ancient history of natural catastrophes give the viewer a heightened sense that geological time is more stupendous than human constructions of time.
Even so, Berg’s play on light emerging from darkness transcends the pervasive pessimism of our current era. When I spoke to Berg, she emphasized that she is always an optimist and she wants her exhibition to remind viewers of the rebirth of natural beauty that comes from disruption. Berg’s fascination with Pyramidion imagery is a complex message that climate change can be the catalyst for driving human psychology into deeper respect for the spirituality of nature.'

@janineranderson will draw from her experience as curator of ‘Huarere: Weather Eye, Weather Ear’, Te Tuhi’s weather station part of the World Weather Network (WWN), and as an accomplice in three performative events commissioned for the WWN:* ‘Word Weathers’, online performance, commissioned by Te Tuhi. Multiple locations and over fifty weather writers.* ‘To Burn, Forest, Fire’, Katie Paterson (2022 – 2023), a ceremony, commissioned by IHME (Helsinki). Multiple locations.* ‘In the Matter of The Rights of Nature: A Staged Hearing’, performance, commissioned by Khōj (New Delhi). The Open Hand Monument, Chandigarh, 5 March 2023.
Curator and artist Janine Randerson says: “The WWN and the host organisations of the above artworks; Te Tuhi (Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland), IHME (Finland), Khōj (New Delhi) are attentive to colonial legacies, repurposing their languages and unsettling the systematic meteorology of global centers. While each performance emerges from specific weather circumstances, they manifest and proliferate globally, attuning to atmospheric turbulence and deepening modes of collectivity.”
The venue for the event is the Senate House in London, where Artangel’s installation ‘A Thousand Words for Weather’, by author Jessica J. Lee and sound artist Claudia Molitor, took place from 22 June 2022 - 25 March 2023, almost exactly two years ago at Summer Solstice. The piece invited listeners to consider the ways in which our experiences of weather—and climate change—are at once intimate, shared, yet untranslatable.
